Band of Brothers

For those of you who haven’t heard, we are expecting another precious baby!  And yes, it is just one!

AND…. it’s a……  BOY!!!!  Son #5!  God clearly has big plans in store for this band of brothers, and we are excited to see how it all unfolds.  What a gift!  It is deeply moving, and it warms my heart to dream about bringing another little boy into our home.  This one surely has our hearts already!   I am 15 weeks and due October 13; maybe baby boy will share a birthday with his Virginia grandfather, Poppy!  I am still monitored by the high risk specialists, and so far, everything is looking great!  Thank you for adding this new little one to your prayer lists.

As for the big brothers: John seems excited, Daniel keeps telling me the baby is ready to come out now, and Andrew is clueless.  These littlest ones will be only 21 months apart, however Andrew is so chill that I imagine he will go with the flow as always.

We were able to visit “Warren’s special spot” as Daniel likes to call it (where he is buried) at the beach during John’s spring break.  It was truly special to “all” be together, in one sense, on Easter Sunday, along with Meade’s parents who joined us for several days.  Obviously, Warren is healed and whole in heaven, and we all look forward to the day when all is made new.  But for now, it is comforting to have a spot where we can remember his time with us on earth, reflect on that precious boy and each little feature we hugged and kissed, and know that we will all be face to face with Jesus some day in our glorified physical states.

There has certainly been pain and sorrow, but it is redemptive and encouraging to reflect on all that has transpired since 2009.  And all the special little ones that God has brought into our lives.  After all, it was John and Warren who taught us we were capable of more love than we ever dreamed possible, and, therefore, they showed us how much we adore being parents and what a gift all of these children are.  We hope to honor Warren and his continued presence in our family’s life, despite his current physical absence, by welcoming his additional siblings into our home.  Death does not have the final say.  With Christ, life wins.

Other updates:
John continues to make his new consonant sounds, and we are so proud!  A friend is praying Psalm 51:5 for John and we would love for you to join her:
Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.”
Here is a video in which he is demonstrating what he wants by signing “more” (by bringing his hands together) and then making a “t” sound for tickles (while looking at this image on the iPad with his amazing speech therapist):

We will have John’s reevaluation meeting at school on Monday where we will go over his new individualized program.  Praise God for this amazing place and staff!  And in August, there will be a campus just a couple miles away!  One of John’s precious teachers, Stacy, gets married in one month!  I am pretty sure John will be heart-broken. ;)  Seriously, we are all so thrilled for Stacy and Rob and can't wait to celebrate with them on the big day!

Following the Nudge

Happy Spring!

Exciting things have been happening around our house!  It is official: John’s school will be opening a campus near us in Buckhead (Atlanta)!  This is a dream come true and we have felt truly honored to get to work on this project with the amazing staff at Jacob’s Ladder.

Additionally, John has just begun making many new sounds (consonant sounds for the first time ever) in the past few weeks.  This encourages us greatly and we pray that God continues to develop his verbal abilities.  It is also a gift to see John, Daniel, and Andrew grow in their relationship as brothers.

I also felt very humbled and grateful to get to share a bit of our story last week at a Bible study for young mothers I attend at The Church of The Apostles.  The last 6 or so months have been a time of questioning, wrestling, and ultimately deepening with the Lord.  I felt that He has been nudging me, indicating it is time to share again… and He was faithful to give me this message:

Only if you have time, go to this link and then click on the March 17 date to the right/middle of the screen.  My testimony is at the beginning of the recording and is about 17 minutes long.  Then at the end of my talk, my mom and Meade join me, and we had the privilege of sharing a little about our dear friend, Jody Noland, and her amazing work, Leave Nothing Unsaid.  She will also be speaking at this Bible study in a few weeks, and I encourage you to check out her mission!

Back to my talk... I realize my perspective may rub some the wrong way or may be outside of your comfort zone…  However, my hope is that this talk is honest, comforting, freeing, and, most importantly, honoring to God.  It is where the Lord has brought us over the past 6 plus years and I am grateful for the journey and how it continues to unfold.  Beauty does come from ashes.

Questions I address in this brief talk in light of all we have experienced:

-Are you at the place yet where you can say you wouldn't change your story?

-It was all worth it, right? …because in the trials the Lord drew close to you and you relied on Him like never before?

Follow up questions/food for thought:
-Does God ordain/cause suffering?  Or does he allow it and ultimately use it for His good purposes?  Or does the answer to this question depend on each individual situation?

-It is possible to both have a testimony/ministry because of the pain and ups and down and yet also speak out against the brokenness in this fallen world?  Or is that unfaithful as we strive to acknowledge God is directing our every step?

-Does God really bring life from death?  What reigns in this world: Christ or the brokenness?

-Where do we find hope in light of suffering?

Heaven's Treasures

Warren and me
The rest of our boys on a family walk yesterday

In honor of Warren being in heaven— healed and whole with his Savior, 6 years as of last night – we wanted to share some verses and quotes that have encouraged us.  It is amazing how God brings Scripture and people across our paths to lift us up and make His truth and hope clear, even in the darkest moments and when leaning into (sometimes embracing, sometimes fighting) life’s “new normal.”

"And now, God, do it again— bring rains to our drought-stricken lives so those who planted their crops in despair will shout hurrahs at the harvest, so those who went off with heavy hearts will come home laughing, with armloads of blessing."
Psalm 126:4-6
-
“There are times in our lives when the pressure seems too great. It certainly seemed to us that God has ‘crossed the line’ when we were left to bear the agony of our young son’s death… I felt forsaken by God.  Years later, I’m now able to say that the same God who had seemingly gone too far is still in the process of gently redeeming the pain of that loss. We still miss our son and always will. There is no such thing as closure. One learns to adjust to redefine what it means to be normal. Yet, we can say our God is sovereign and we can trust Him with our lives and especially the lives of our children”  (Chuck Betters, Teaching Them Young, p. 167).
-
"We have been blessed to suffer at a young age because it informs the way we live the rest of our lives."
-
“I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.”
Isaiah 45:3
-
"Death hurts because we were made for life. 'I have set before you life and death,' we read in Deuteronomy 30:19. 'Choose life.' Some would say that 'choosing life' means choosing only to see the positive, looking always for the silver lining. To walk this path is to live in perpetual denial. Following Jesus means choosing to see the truth even when it is painful. Death hurts.  Loss causes deep ache. And, somehow in the agony of pain, we are free to find joy because we can trust that Jesus redeems all things.  Where death reminds us that we are made of dust, inconsequential in the course of history, Jesus reminds us that in him we are loved and have life forever.  This is a reason to sing even on dark days.”
-Emilie Hayner Wagner (daughter of Steve Hayner who recently passed away)

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you.”
1 Peter 1:3-4
